A European Panel Approach to the E-Consumer

Abstract: Retail consumption on Internet did not experienced until now the radiant future that was predicted. Should we conclude that the low take-off of B2C means that Internet is not the core of a revolution of exchange forms? The question should probably be raised in a different way. Internet can play various roles in intermediation between consumers, producers and distributors. The notion of "quasi-consumption", introduced here, seems to be more suitable than the one of "consumption". From the Netvalue panel in four European countries (England, France, Denmark and Italy) and over two periods (April 2001 and April 2002), we investigate the navigation and quasi-consumption habits in these countries using data-mining tools. Constant facts can be exhibited, but also learning, specializing and lassitude phenomena. The four countries appear to be at four different evolution phases of the Internet usages.
