Abstract: For A. Sen and J. Rawls, education contributes to creating and increasing self-respect in individuals, strengthening their autonomy and guaranteeing social cohesion. Sen in particular underlines that education is a necessary condition for economic development. In the view of Rawls and Sen, it is advisable to protect freedom of access to education as well as equality of opportunity.
