Abstract: This paper tests various theories relative to the choice of the number of bank relationships on a french sample of 244 small and medium business. We formulate hypotheses relative to firm's characteristics and to the impact of this choice on collateral requirements, cost and exposure to bank credit rationing. Firm's size, profitability as well as the degree of opacity significantly reduce the number of banks. From the supply point of view, behaviours depend on the competition level represented by the firm's number of banks. The effects of the lending relationship depend on the risk level represented by the degree of implication of the bank in the financing of the firm.
