Abstract: The contribution analyses the evolution of the relationships between the Ministry of Defense (MoD) the industry and the research laboratories in the domains of organisation of research projects and procurement policy in the UK military sector. This evolution is interpreted as a continuous process of trial and error bet ween on the one side the market economy considerations and on the other side the requirements from the economics of knowledge. The analysis investigates the decisions taken by the MoD from the mid 80's to now (from the best value for money principle to the privatisation of the major part of the UK military research forces through the creation of QinetiQ). The results show that the permanent trade-off between market considerations and cognitive motives has conducted the MoD to implement hybrid governance modes, in particular through different types of platforms that combine competitive and collaborative mechanisms.
