Abstract:
The recent transformations in the Defense sector point towards a central question, that of its dynamics of innovation. The increasing participation of innovative SMEs side by side to the prime contractors leads us to investigate the relations of subcontracting implemented in that sector and their impact on the innovative contents of the armament programs. We postulate that the model of "distributed innovation" represents a theoretical solution that is adapted to the constraints and difficulties of the armament sector. Our field study of innovating SMEs linked with Defense tends to show that the current practices are evolving towards partitioned co-operative models, at the expense of the innovating potential of the industry as a whole. We then bring some explanations as for this situation and propose tracks of exploratory research for better including/understanding the dynamics of innovation and the evolution of the defense sector.
