Abstract: This paper proposes to study the making of coordination when practitioners operate under conditions of instability and volatility. In such circumstances, they often have to challenge usual coordination patterns, generate others and implement them within the existing framework of local rules and routines. In doing so, they enact new practices and shape coordination in ways that can be consequential for strategic outcomes. The case study focuses on coordination practices developed by fighter aircrews and ground forces during air-to-ground operations in Afghanistan. It points out how these war-fighters continuously articulate mechanisms, means and tools of coordination to adjust their practices to situations they deal with. The paper reveals that they are involved in creative activities which can be regarded as significant to strategic issues. In particular, it discusses managerial outcomes came from coordination practices developed in theater and the way they contribute to leverage French air force performance.
