Abstract: The international differences in the relationships between female labour market participation and family composition are embedded in a variety of welfare capitalism. In order to analyse these differences, this paper exhibits the different ‘compromises' on which family policy are grounded in different Welfare State Regimes, as stated by Esping-Andersen. The diversity of compromises imply different types of coordination between female labour market participation and family formation. Different types of complementarity between social, family-oriented and employment policies are contrasted, as well as different consequences on labour market gendered inequalities. The French case illustrates a specific midway between two patterns.
