Abstract: This research deals with the customers' behaviours when a web site asks them for personal data. The objective is to identify the respective impact of the individual and situational factors on the decision of the Net surfers to provide personal information. Two potentially influential situational factors are tested within the framework of an experimental study: context of request and quantity of data. The results confirm the effect of the quantity and show that the situational variables have an impact more important than the personal convictions. We also show a commitment effect: when an individual accepts to give personal data, he would have a stronger probability of continuing the relation with the company at the origin of the request.
