Abstract: The release of iPad, Apple's new tablet computer, was followed by a spate of comments and predictions about its chances of success. These focused on the object's intrinsic qualities and on the firm's Midas' touch on whatever it designs. Wether or not iPad is successful is not the main point however. From a business perspective, iPad is not to be seen as a (more or less) revolutionary object but, instead, as part of the 'road map' of a company that will be a major player in the evolving 'netpliance' market. It is important to understand how this new object fits into a complicated long-term strategy with high stakes. This interpretation of iPad from the angles of the company's strategy and of the reconfiguration of this industry sheds light on a shift taking place in a word where strategy has become a driving force.
