Abstract: French people and sustainable tourism: a study of their representations This study aims at identifying French perceptions of sustainable tourism and at comparing them to the institutional definition. The results, based on a sample of 630 respondents, show an understanding of the three dimensions of sustainable tourism: respect of the environment, maximization of economic returns to local stakeholders, respect of host populations. However, some differences with the definition are revealed, such as important desires of contact with nature and cultural immersion. The analysis conducted with the Alceste software also shows that representations of sustainable tourism are structured around four ideas: (a) actions to meet "sustainable tourism values" (b) vacations close to nature and in France, (c) the use of soft/clean means of transportation, and (d) long distance journeys allowing for cultural immersion. Means to develop sustainable tourism and recommendations to professionals in the tourism sector are then proposed.
