Abstract: Historically "democratic firms" have been opposed to the predominance of capital over labor, as well as any form of hierarchy which undermines the autonomy of labor. By such opposition, "democratic firms" have limited themselves to skilled occupations where the needs of management were restrained by the autonomy of professions. Were "democratic firms" actually limited to such conditions? By examining a current empirical case, this article discusses the conditions in which the direction of a company can be shared. Most notably we show that it is necessary to reconsider democratic operating principles on the basis of a unified " common good " by keeping in mind the needs of joint management. Such a reconsideration creates forms of governance which are both possible and sustainable.
