Abstract: This article proposes a review of both early and recent research on a particular type of behaviour, known as browsing, that is frequently adopted by consumers during visits to retail outlets, but little studied to date. Who are these browsers? What is the history of browsing behaviour? What are the short- and long-term consequences of this behaviour? The answers to these questions should help managers, and especially retailers, appreciate the real advantages offered by the presence of browsers in their stores and to determine the variables that they can put to use in order to favour browsing behaviour.
