Abstract: A mode! is presented for understanding crises that are so intense that we can say that the organization itself is in crisis. After a review of the literature by type, the examination of three cases shows that three different phenomena cause such crises: a phenomenon of "avoidance" that structures the organization, a situation-dependent event that forces the organization to face avoided problems, and a management not adapted to this confrontation. Practical lessons are drawn in conclusion.
