Abstract: This article aims at reinstating Pellegrino Rossi's contribution to the theory of supply and demand. It shows how Rossi developed a theory of original value with sources taken from both traditional English and French thought. This article shows how innovative the mechanisms used by Rossi to explain the theory of supply and demand as compared with the classic theory of free competition. We demonstrate that Rossi can be considered as a precursor of the concept of reservation price which Jules Dupuit developed. The author also seems to be the precursor of many marginalist economists. His analyses brought him to the development of an original look at supply and demand at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
