Abstract:
The transformation of France's backward telecommunications network occurred over a period of several decades but a major impetus was given by the program to provide "a telephone for all" in France in the 1970s. This initiative was launched and driven by the director general of the French telecommunications administration at this time, Gérard Théry. With the enthusiastic support of the French President, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the world's most modern telecommunications network was rolled out, at the same time as its administration was radically overhauled and modernized. The industrial landscape was reconfigured to ensure France's role in exports and future innovations. With the launch of the Minitel, the French telematics eco-system, France pioneered the era of the digital society.
