Abstract: In the Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith evokes the way in which the pins were made in his time. In decomposing the process into 18 operations, he found the basis of his theory of division of labor. Its documentation is made up of texts published in France on the subject within the framework of the Academy of Sciences and the Diderot's Encyclopaedia. It contains texts and drawings concerning the techniques of making pins in Normandy. This description is static in the sense that it does not indicate the dates of the observation or the invention of the various elements. Curiously innovation is absent from this considerable effort of description of techniques. Although, there have been modifications of the process, until the invention of a machine performing all operations.
