Abstract: Lawsuits against a key medical opinion leader for sexual offenses generated extensive media coverage and many newsgroup posts. Our goal was twofold : to describe the rationale and purpose of these posts and to test the links between patients' personal previous experience and trust in the key opinion leader as well as their position of defense or charge. We analyzed 191 posts through thematic content analysis according to Huberman and Miles (1991) recommendations. Persons who regarded themselves as victims expressed a negative valence toward the opinion leader benevolence and integrity but a positive valence to his perceived competence which is not affected. Satisfaction from a personal prior experience was positively correlated with all dimensions of the trust in the practitioner and led to his defense, while prior dissatisfaction resulted in the reverse effects. We discussed the transferability of the results of this idiosyncratic case in light of the trust researches. We proposed preventive means to avoid ethical boundaries violations.
