Abstract:
This paper analyses the development of non-conventional hydrocarbons, distinguishing its ‘internal' effects, i.e. those observable in the North American area, and those of an ‘external' nature — economic or geopolitical ones — spreading beyond these borders and particularly in Europe. The objective is, specifically, to determine the range of adaptations available to Europeans in dealing with enhanced American competitiveness. The essential conclusion is that, inasmuch as European companies cannot benefit from energy prices (gas, electricity) comparable to those in the United States, they absolutely have to maintain their advantage in terms of energy efficiency.
