Abstract: The MONT D'OR CLINIC was set up in a major French city 80 years ago. Since then it has increased its services continually over the years. The clinic initially had 15 beds but by 2011 these had increased to 220. However during the intervening years, this private clinic had to cope with many changes including financial difficulties, which it always managed to overcome ... until now. The clinic is currently struggling with a new crisis. It was for a long time considered to be the reference institution in the field of health care, but now, its reputation is tarnished by its position in rankings, its financial situation is a source of concern, and the atmosphere among staff is characterized by stress and tension. On top of this a heavyweight new competitor has suddenly appeared on the scene. Major changes in the health care sector, brought about essentially by new demands in terms of quality standards and new, more and more sophisticated equipment, have in recent years led to the buy-out of many independent private clinics by big health care groups. The MONT D'OR CLINIC might well have been taken over in this way on a number of occasions, but its shareholders always remained steadfastly attached to their institution's independence. Faced with his problem, of crisis proportions, the Director of the clinic has naturally been concerned and asked himself questions, such as: What future can he possibly see for 'his' clinic? Can the MONT D'OR CLINIC continue to maintain its independence? And at what cost? Consequently he decided to call upon the services of a consultant to carry out a thorough analysis of the clinic and then give his recommendations.
