Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the relevance of a qualitative approach to map the nature and operation of the plural relationships of different logistics networks. Based on a literature review and an empirical study, a theoretical model of three logistics networks of proximity is presented, explained and linked to a discussion on the appropriateness of qualitative research in supply chain management. A matrix analysis is employed to develop the model. The paper confirms the significance of a qualitative view for the research considered. The advantages and limitations of such an approach are also examined. Finally, the paper provides new perspectives for research and supports the idea of an adaptation or a combination of methods in the field of supply chain management while refuting a methodological dogmatism.
