Abstract:
This article deals with the perceptions of scholars in French Universities. It provides a mapping of teachers and researchers in terms of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. It shows that they are generally satisfied with their job. Their pleasure at work is associated with the educational dimension of their profession, the attachment to the notion of public service, freedom, autonomy and the intellectual dimension of their business. They also express a strong commitment, mainly affective in their organization and their profession. Anyway, dissatisfaction is also expressed in terms of salary and career. Scholars indicate an increase of ``bureaucratization'' and a devaluation of educational tasks in the evaluation. A possible explanation of the dissatisfaction can be found in a conflict of values, between the values that have traditionally presided to the career of scholars and new values emerging from the current reform In French Universities, which are more focused on efficiency. The analysis is based on a quantitative study of 2028 respondents and the qualitative analysis of 696 more detailed textual responses.
