Abstract: The findings of a large qualitative study with visitors to the Louvre museum in France add to our understanding of how a contemporary art program can renew a museum's audience, their cultural experience and how they view the permanent collections, as well as deepen our understanding of the museum's role. Visitors' reception of contemporary art works was found to differ according to their familiarity with the museum and their art expertise. Analysis of interviews with respondents reveals three broad visitor segments, each with its own practices, positions and reactions, and suggests new paths for communication and management.
