Abstract:
According to Elster's interpretation, Leibniz' rationalism is perceived as precursor of the spirit of capitalism. This thesis does not resist an attentive reading of Leibniz. It is advisable on such a basis to distinguish between the spirit of capitalism and economic rationality. This article aims to establish this distinction upon Leibniz' Theodicy. It emerges from it that economic understanding is of practical nature.
