Le commerce extérieur de la France en produits laitiers: entre impasses et opportunités

Vincent Chatellier

Post-Print from HAL

Abstract: France, the second largest milk producing country in the European Union (EU), exports around 42% of its domestic production, mainly to neighboring European countries. If the development of exports to international markets is more recent, especially to China, they now contribute to a large extent to the positive trade balance (3.2 billion euros in 2017). Despite a diversified supply of dairy products and a saturation of global needs at the national level, France's imports of dairy products are significant (6.5 billion liters in milk equivalent in 2017). Competition with other EU Member States is all the more serious as milk production has increased significantly in several Member States (including Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and Poland) since the end of the milk quotas in 2015 and some buyers (including out-of-home catering) favor low-priced supplies. Using customs data for the period 2000 to 2017, this paper discusses the evolution of France's foreign trade in dairy products.
