Abstract: To understand Forbonnais' economic thought, the distinction he establishes between interior and exterior commerce was often stressed by commentators. But it leaves out the colonial trade which allows to increase the nation's production of wealth and to establish the power of the State. This article proposes a new interpretation of Forbonnais' thought that would take into account the role played by colonial trade and understand the economic strategy he advocates.
