Abstract:
The goal of this article is to present the specific functioning of professional theatre in France as a special case of more general socio-economic logics. A first part deals with four main aspects : theatre is first a matter of private initiatives and organisations that yet depend to a great extent on public administration and regulation ; the current evolutions reinforce the service economy dimension of the theatre and the weight of the logically associated phenomena of personalisation and network ; the structuring of the professional theatre since 1945 has been carried out from a number of breaks which may now limit its development prospects ; the relative interest audiences have in theatre and the weight of judgement-makers raise questions about how theatrical works are valued and more broadly about the future of professional theatre. A second part brings up some assumptions about current issues for a public interest theatre.
