Abstract: Even if animated movies and visual effects represent separate economic sectors, the skills they involve are directly connected. It is therefore unsurprising that there is an overlap in the process of their creation, often simply called pipelines, within the companies that make them. For some years now, pipelines have been understood as of key importance by these animation and VFX studios, especially as the volume of production deliverables is ever increasing, economic constraints have given rise to a trend for multi-site collaborations, and there is a drive towards the constant improvement of image quality. The purpose of this study is firstly to clarify the pipeline concept, and then to examine the innovations produced by research and development teams in French CG studios. The main focus is on showing how these teams support in-depth work organization and the evolution of the studios.
