Abstract: Perceived wastage of objects: An analysis through psychological distance theory and construal-level theory The aim of this paper is to understand, by drawing on psychological distance theory and construal-level theory, the extent to which individuals perceive that they waste things. Analysis of 21 interviews conducted at the res- pondents' homes shows that their spatial, temporal, hypothetical and social distances to objects influence how they represent the utility of objects (abstract/concrete) and whether or not they perceive their wastage. More specifically, the results show that: 1) the spatial, temporal and hypothetical distances to the objects generate an abstract representation of their utility which leads to a low perceived wastage; 2) the social distance to the future beneficiary of the objects leads to an abstract representation of their use and to a high perceived wastage. The theoretical, managerial and societal implications of these findings are discussed.
