Abstract: "Looking at the evolution of the French economy since World War II, we find a striking contrast between the remarkable performance of the real economy during the first three decades and their gradual deterioration during the last four decades. The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the interactions between economic policy choices and socio-economic structures that we believe explain France's long-term growth regime. On the one hand, public action is constrained by the institutional framework in which it operates, and on the other, this framework changes markedly as a result of a reorientation of strategic choices in economic policy."
