Abstract:
Crowdfunding (participative fundraising system) consists in collecting funds from a crowd of contributors in order to partially or totally finance projects proposed by individuals or organisations. This new form of open funding is now raising interest among local authorities which consider it as an alternative to finance their projects whilst involving citizens in the development of their local policy. The concept of crowdfunding has now been clearly defined but very little research has been conducted on civic crowdfunding. Through the study of two dedicated platforms, the objective of this article is to analyse the mechanisms of civic crowdfunding and identify its characteristics. This survey has helped determine the motivations of local authorities to resort to crowdfunding and demonstrate that this new tool is both a means of communication and of greater proximity with citizens.
