Abstract: Through an empirical qualitative study conducted with doctors, nurses and orderlies in three services in a teaching hospital, we endeavor to determine more closely the links between time and emotions in hospitals by specifically focusing on the concept of emotional labor. Our results show that time influences emotional labor in different ways, by favoring the appropriation of emotional rules and emotional regulation strategies, along with the adaptation to the weight of emotions, and by adjusting the expression of emotions. Our fieldwork also reveals the pervasiveness of time pressure and the importance of facilitating work breaks and procedures for the social sharing of emotions which are both cathartic and regenerative, thus preserving the quality of life at work.
