Abstract:
The article emphasizes the three main future systemic challenges of European cities, according to the variety of the national situations and intensity. First, the demographic slowdown offers an interesting opportunity to speed up the ecological transition. Second challenge, the strategies of insertion in the international competition of the great cities have to take care of the territorialy well balanced economic development of their surrounding territory. Third, the consolidation of the metropolitan governments has to respect the demands of more inclusive, participatory and proximity democracy.
