Abstract: The article is based on the courses given by Michel Foucault at the Collège de France in 1976 and published in 1997 under the title "Il faut défendre la société", courses that deal with the discourses of war in their opposition to the discourses of peace. We confront his approach with the one that presents, in economic analysis, as the typical approach to rivalry, via the emphasis on social contradictions, the Marxian approach. We deduce from its limits, in the light of the Foucaultian teachings, a few issues for developing an economic approach to rivalry.
