Abstract: The concentration of hog slaughter-houses in Brittany could jeopardize the quality of the spot price elicited in the MPB auction market. In addition, the recurring request of futures hog prices in order to manage the producer margin on feed costs could be filled by the launching of a dedicated futures market, but this market requires development conditions incompatible with the European industrial structures. The answer to the need for risk management could be found in the development of financial contracts that benefit from the positive symmetry needs of hog producers and processors.
