Abstract: This paper deals with the coordination system between the actors of an agri-food chain. After an introduction about quality issue in the non-irrigated cereal chains in Mali, the limits of vertical coordination to manage the quality signal are presented. Olson's theory of collective action is afterwards used to analyze the contribution to quality promotion of a specific form of horizontal coordination. The detailed study of the collection action carried out by the Danaya traders Association allows to discuss the interest and limits of Olson's typology as well as the conditions required for the success of this complementary system of coordination through improving the quality process in the countries of the South.
