Technical change and lifelong training

Changement technologique et formation tout au long de la vie

Luc Behaghel

Post-Print from HAL

Abstract: We study the correlation between technical or organisational change and the incidence of firm-provided training across age groups, in order to test the hypothesis that older workers suffer from a comparative disadvantage with regard to training, whose consequences increase in times of changes. We obtain contrasted results. Organisational change is correlated with more frequent training in the main task and, to a lower extent, in management and teamwork, for all age groups. The rise in training incidence seems stronger in rural areas, and, for workers aged above 50, among unskilled women. But manual workers and clerks aged above 50 are less frequently trained to computers in firms with advanced computerization.
