Abstract:
This paper discusses the reception of Karl Polanyi's work by some leading scholars of the New Economic Sociology. It shows that Polanyi has received two different kinds of criticisms that, both of which, contest that there can be such thing as disembeddedness. These criticisms are not very justified and it is possible to give an explanation of this misunderstanding by distinguishing between two different and complementary notions of embeddedness, a first one that puts the stress on the social conditions upon which economic transactions are necessary carried out and a second one that describes how much economies are differentiated.
