Abstract:
This article addresses the issue of asymmetric strategic alliances in the agricultural production sector. Our study sought to identify the motivations of financial partners and farmers engaged in such relationships and to characterize the operational specificities of the proposed models. In a case study applied to the Pangea society in Quebec, our results show that this model is constructed to minimize conflicts of interest risks. Pangea's uniqueness relies on its operating flexibility and on the use of governance mechanisms based primarily on trust and on maintaining the producer's owner-manager role. In light of our results, we discuss the outlooks for the Pangea model and, more broadly, for other agro-financial joint-venture models. We also discuss the risks that the Pangea model could generate, particularly in terms of partner selection and stakeholders' reluctance.
