Abstract:
The paper is exploring the role of innovation and research in the competition between the main French wine regions. Three empirical works are combined: i) an institutional analysis of the regional systems of innovation that can influence local wine industries; ii) an evaluation of the economic evolution of these regional vineyards during the last 20 years ; iii) a bibliometric analysis of the scientific articles produced by the regional research centers on wine topics. Results suggest a "French paradox", revealing apparent counter effect of the system of innovation impacts. Our discussion explores different arguments in order to explain this paradox. We point out the role of major external and internal factors, such as the structure of inherited production and specific markets crisis. But the quality of the relations between farms, firms and local organization dedicated to research and innovation are also at stake, calling for further analysis on the relevant networks to innovation in the wine industry.
