Abstract: Utopian economists challenged the capitalist mode of production of their time, the rules of property or competition and above all the appalling misery of the working class. Their analyses were divergent: Saint-Simon wished for the transition from a military society to an industrial society; Charles Fourier, with the Phalanstères, demanded universal peace with the advent of a brilliant despot; Constantin Pecqueur called for a world government as a factor of peace; and Michel Chevalier, believed in the message of free competition to eliminate wars. As for Proudhon, a stateless society can eradicate both pauperism and war.
