Abstract: Military expenditure accounts for 6% of total world production. However, the defence of one country also depends on the defence of another. The lack of security and the antagonism between market economy countries and socialist countries continue to add to the burden of this arms race. The result is a significant opportunity cost, since essential infrastructure can no longer be developed and aid to developing countries is not commensurate with the challenges of fighting misery in the Third World and growing poverty in developed countries.
