Abstract: Currency is a carrier of choice. It is a general equivalent and an instrument for anticipating economic actions. The monetarist policy proposed by Milton Friedman was imposed at the beginning of the 1980s. Its main objective is to fight against inflation, and not in favour of full employment as Keynesian thought. It is about controlling the money supply or interest rates. The central bank uses, for example, reserve requirements, open market operations or refinancing. Debates on the European Union concern in particular an overly restrictive monetary policy, the Stability Pact, budget deficits and public debt.
