Abstract: France imposed a ban on hydraulic fracturing in 2011, giving in to public pressure about the potential negative impact of hydraulic fracturing on the environment (especially on water). In 2012, the newly elected president of the French Republic, François Hollande, announced his intention to maintain the ban during his entire presidency and called for the revocation of pending exploration permits.
