Abstract: The comparison of military expenditure is the subject of lively debate in today's world, in the context of an arms race that is leading the UN to call for disarmament for development. However, the definitions of military expenditure (as well as the verification of States' official data) and the methods for converting national currency units into a general international equivalent lead to new political debates that cannot be extinguished by the most rigorous statistical and economic methods.
