Abstract: The chapter focuses on future of rural areas face to the affirmation of metropolises. It is structured in three chronological parts. The first part returns to the traditional representation of the city-country opposition until the 1970s, to quickly conclude on its disparition. The second part focuses on current status of rural areas, integrated into urbanized society. Three complementary plans are detailed: the social and economic geography of rural areas generally under the influence of cities, the forms of representation and modelling that make it possible to account for them, and the gradual erosion of specifically rural policies. The third part attempts a prospective vision by taking into account natural resources according to two scenarios; the first is based on continuation of current trends and appropriation by metropolises of natural resources located in rural areas; in the second scenario, metropolises and rural territories jointly organise the management of natural resources, according to a reconfiguration based on emergence of bioregions.
