Abstract: Hilferding and Luxemburg associate the imperialism that unfolded in the last decades of the 19th century with a new phase of capitalism. Competition for the spheres of private capital implantation outside Europe was to result in war between nation states subject to the interests of their nationals. The two authors, however, have a rather different analysis. The article is devoted to highlighting this fact as well as its consequences on their vision of socialism.
