Abstract: Building on the Resource Based Theory, this article initiates the question of the longevity of coopetition and shows that partnerssymmetry plays a favorable role on the longevity of an alliance between competitors. The method is based on the in-depth case study of SEVEL, an alliance between PSA and FIAT, which is outstanding in its duration. A review of 150 original documents from the archives of the two manufacturing sites, in France and Italy, and 22 interviews, allows proposing an extended conception of the symmetry which stabilizes the alliance and thus ensures its longevity.
