Abstract:
Few studies have examined how the age of a firm can influence its economic and financial performance over time, especially in Africa. This study fills this gap by examining this question from a single sample of companies listed in four African financial markets (Botswana, Ghana, Zambia and Zimbabwe) over the 2008-2017. We find that the age of a firm and its performance follows a U-shaped curve, suggesting a nonlinear differentiated effect. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis of learning by action and handicaps related to the age.
