Abstract: In 1914-1918, economic warfare and military warfare were endlessly intertwined. Military headquarters and those in command at the fronts expressed their needs, ever renewed in quantity, quality and reliability, as well as types of weapons and ammunition. Their impatience reflected their anxieties, especially at the moment of large-scale engagements. Their purpose was to counter the superiority of German artillery by speeding up production and introducing more powerful and adaptable models. A true production system came into being, mobilising state arsenals and private plants that were themselves hubs in the supply networks, while all clamoured for more raw materials and labour.
