Abstract: Studies carried out by in the past have shown that distance learning provision has two characteristics : the first being a low unit cost compared to traditionnal modes of teaching, and the second being relatively low internal efficiency. Cost-effictive analysis on the other hand have shown generally that distance learning provision was cost efficient. Our paper will show the studies carried out in the French university distance learning centres concerning the student unit cost and the internal efficiency, measured by exam passing rates. The studies confirm a low unit cost compared to traditional modes of teaching and a low internal efficiency.
